Before you pay for a new screen

A cracked screen is usually a straightforward fix

Most screens we see are cracked, have black patches or lines across them, or have gone dim. In most cases the rest of the laptop is fine. The screen is its own part, and it can be swapped without touching your files.

What it costs depends mainly on the laptop. Screens for common models are cheap and easy to get. Touchscreens, high-resolution panels and MacBook displays cost a lot more. So we look at your exact model first, find the part price, and give you one figure for parts and labour before you decide anything.

Sometimes a new screen isn't worth it. If the laptop is ten years old and the screen costs more than the laptop is worth, we'll say so and suggest a cheaper way to keep working, like plugging it into a monitor.

Screen problems we fix

What's wrong with your screen?

Cracked or smashed glass

Drops, pressure in a bag and heavy things on the lid are the usual causes. A small crack tends to spread, so don't leave it too long.

Black patches, lines or ink spots

Coloured lines or dark blobs mean the panel itself is damaged. That needs a new screen, not a software fix.

Dim or flickering display

Sometimes it's the screen, sometimes the cable or backlight. We test first so you only pay for what's actually broken.

Works on a monitor, not the laptop

If the picture shows on a TV or monitor but not on the laptop, the screen or its cable has failed. Your files are fine.

Touchscreen not responding

On touchscreen laptops the glass and touch layer are usually one part. We check your model and tell you what's involved.

MacBook display damage

We repair MacBook Air and MacBook Pro screens. They cost more than most Windows laptop screens, so we quote first.

How it works

From cracked to fixed in four steps

1

Tell us the model

Send the make and model (it's on the underside) and a photo of the screen. We'll tell you quickly if it can be repaired.

2

Get a fixed quote

We find the right screen for your laptop and give you the parts and labour figure up front.

3

Drop it off

Bring it to our Cloverdale workshop. Call first so we can arrange a time and have the part ready.

4

Test and collect

We check the display, touch and hinges before we hand it back, and your 30-day guarantee starts that day.

What affects the price

Why screen prices vary so much

Screen type

A basic panel for a common laptop is cheap. Touch, OLED and high-resolution screens cost more.

Your laptop's age

Parts for older models can be hard to find. We'll tell you if we can't source a good one.

Brand and model

MacBook displays are sold as a whole assembly and cost far more than most Windows laptop screens.

Other damage

If the drop also bent the frame or hinges, those might need work too. We check before we quote.

Your data

A screen swap doesn't touch your files. If there's other damage, we'll talk about backing up first.

Is it worth it?

If the repair costs close to a replacement laptop, we'll tell you straight and let you decide.

Quote first, then you decide

You approve the price before we start. Our standard rate is on the pricing page. No fix, no fee, plus a 30-day workmanship and parts guarantee.
