Recoverable vs Not
Logical failures (corruption, accidental deletion, formatting) are often fully recoverable. Physical failures (clicking noises, drives that won’t spin up) are more serious but frequently still partially or fully recoverable with the right approach.
What to Do Immediately
Stop using the drive right away — continuing to use a failing drive is the single biggest cause of permanent data loss. Don’t attempt DIY software fixes on a drive making unusual noises.
