Is it really the battery?

Batteries wear out. After a few years of daily use most laptops hold a lot less charge than they did new. If yours lasts an hour instead of five, a new battery is usually the answer.

But 'not charging' isn't always the battery. It can be the charger, the cable, the charging port or the board. Buying a battery online and finding it didn't help is a common and annoying mistake, so we test first and tell you what's actually wrong.

If you're not sure which battery your laptop takes, we'll find the right one for your exact model.

Signs of a battery problem

When to get your battery checked

Lasts under an hour

If it used to last for hours and now barely lasts one, the battery has worn out.

Shuts off suddenly

Dropping from 40% to nothing, or dying when you unplug it, usually points to a tired battery.

Plugged in but not charging

Could be the battery, the charger or the port. We test each so you only replace what's failed.

Gets very hot

Heat can come from a failing battery or blocked fans. We check both. See slow computer repair.

Swollen battery

If the trackpad lifts, the case bulges or the laptop won't sit flat, stop using it and call us. A swollen battery is a safety risk.

MacBook battery warning

A 'service battery' message or a MacBook that dies quickly. See our Mac repairs.
