Laptop Won’t Turn On? What to Check Before You Call a Technician

A laptop that won’t turn on is alarming, but it isn’t always as serious as it looks. Here’s what to check first.

Power and Charging Checks

Confirm the charger is actually working (try a different outlet or cable if you have one), and check for any indicator light when it’s plugged in. A dead battery combined with a faulty charging port can look identical to a dead laptop.

Screen Issue vs Power Issue

Sometimes the laptop is actually powering on, but the screen isn’t displaying anything. Listen and feel for fan noise or warmth after pressing the power button — if there’s activity but no picture, that’s a different (and sometimes simpler) problem.

When It’s a Hardware Fault

If you’ve confirmed power is reaching the laptop and there’s still no response at all, it’s likely a hardware fault — motherboard, power circuit, or battery — and that needs a proper diagnosis.
