How to Tell If You Have a Virus on Your Computer

Not every slow or strange-acting computer has a virus — but some symptoms are worth taking seriously.

Common Symptoms

Unexpected pop-ups, new toolbars or browser homepages you didn’t install, programs opening on their own, or your computer running hot and slow even when idle are all common signs.

What Not to Do

Avoid downloading random “cleaner” or “antivirus” tools you find via a pop-up — some of these are malware themselves. Don’t enter passwords or banking details until the computer has been checked.
